Gaelic refers to the group of languages once spoken by the Gaels, who originally lived in Ireland and then spread to Scotland, the Isle of Man, which is located in the Irish Sea. There are actually three dialects of Gaelic – Manx Gaelic, called Gaelg; Irish Gaelic, called Gaeilge; and Scottish Galeic, called Gàidhlig. Manx was spoken on the Isle of Man, Galeic in Scotland, and Gaeilge in Ireland. Gaelic is lumped in with other Celtic languages which make up the Brythonic group; it includes Cornish, Welsh, and Breton. Interestingly, the Irish do not refer to their language as Gaelic, it’s simply “Irish” or Gaeilge .
A person who’s just starting out to learn the language will encounter some difficulties. The alphabet is different as are the pronunciation of words. If you are traveling to some of these places, even if you’re only using something like answering services in a place where a variation of Gaelic is spoken, it’s helpful to know as much about the language. Pronunciation guides and common phrase listings will be extremely helpful.
