Glossary Area Code Split

Area Code Split

An area code split happens when an area code is divided into two or more separate regions. One area will keep the old area code, while the new regions get a new code while keeping the last 7 numbers. People can still use the old code for a short time, but the new codes become mandatory after a time. Splits are rare since they create a great deal of hassle for customers.
