SS7 (Signaling System 7)

SS7 is a method used by phone companies to ring the party being called. Normally when a call is placed without SS7, the line is tied up when the other phone is ringing. When SS7 is being used, the other line is signaled without tying up the line. If the other phone is answered, then the connection is made. This eliminates a large amount of the network being used with calls that are not actually connected.
