The giant sequoias, native only in California’s Sierra Nevada, are among the largest and oldest living organisms on Earth. Some of them were already ancient before the Roman Empire, surviving changing climates, natural challenges, and generations of human history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The General Sherman Tree, the largest tree on Earth by volume, is perhaps the best-known example. Estimated to be between 2,200 and 2,700 years old, it towers more than 275 feet above the forest floor. These old-growth sequoias store enormous amounts of carbon, provide habitat for countless species, and help scientists better understand how forests can withstand a changing climate. Safeguarding them ensures future generations can experience these extraordinary forests for centuries to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
